Looking to refresh your home or office in Nelson, Castlegar, or Trail this season? Choosing the perfect paint color is important—but selecting the right paint finish is just as crucial for achieving lasting results and visual appeal.

As your trusted painting contractor in the Kootenays, A&A Painting Ltd. is here to guide you through the best finish options for every room, based on lighting, function, and durability needs. Whether you’re planning a residential painting project or updating a commercial interior, this guide will help you make smart, stylish, and lasting decisions.

What Are the Different Types of Paint Finishes?

When preparing for your next interior painting project, understanding the types of paint finishes will help ensure long-term satisfaction.

Flat or Matte Finish: Ideal for low-traffic areas, matte finishes offer a non-reflective surface that hides imperfections beautifully.
Eggshell Finish: A popular choice for living rooms and bedrooms, eggshell finishes provide a subtle sheen and are easier to clean than flat paint.
Satin Finish: Great for high-traffic areas like hallways and family rooms, satin has a soft glow and is easy to wipe down.
Semi-Gloss Finish: Highly durable and moisture-resistant, semi-gloss paint is recommended for kitchens, bathrooms, and trim.
Gloss or High-Gloss Finish: Best for doors, cabinets, and baseboards—this finish adds shine and can withstand frequent cleaning.

Best Paint Finishes for Each Room

  • Living Rooms & Bedrooms — Recommended: Eggshell or Satin

Eggshell provides just the right balance of elegance and durability. It reflects light slightly, making rooms feel warm and welcoming—perfect for cozy evenings.

  • Kitchens & Bathrooms — Recommended: Semi-Gloss or Satin

Moisture-prone areas require durable, washable finishes. Semi-gloss resists humidity and stains, making it a top choice for both residential and commercial spaces.

  • Hallways & Stairwells — Recommended: Satin

For high-traffic areas, satin finishes are ideal due to their cleanability and resistance to scuffing—crucial in family homes in Trail or Nelson.

  • Children’s Bedrooms & Playrooms — Recommended: Satin or Semi-Gloss

When durability and easy maintenance matter, opt for semi-gloss. Wipe off messes without dulling the color or texture.

  • Ceilings — Recommended: Flat

Non-reflective and forgiving, flat finishes are ideal for ceilings because they conceal imperfections and provide a smooth finish.

  • Trim, Moulding, & Cabinets — Recommended: Semi-Gloss or Gloss

Professional painting contractors in Castlegar often recommend semi-gloss for its crisp lines and high durability.

Tips for Choosing the Right Finish

• Consider Lighting: Satin or gloss reflects more light—perfect for darker spaces.
• Think Practicality: Kitchens and bathrooms demand easy-to-clean finishes.
• Know Your Style: Matte is cozy and elegant, while gloss is bold and modern.
• Test First: Try sample swatches on your wall to see how finishes look in natural and artificial light.

In the middle of September of this year, A&A Painting Ltd. made a little bit of history by restoring and repainting the old Fire Lookout and Watch Station atop the Old Glory Mountain near Rossland, British Columbia. It also showed that no painting job is too hard or too high for a painting company like A&A Painting.

Old Glory Mountain Fire Lookout Station

Aside from the burned-out weather station on the summit of Old Glory Mountain, the forest fire lookout and watch station on the mountain summit was first built by the B.C. Forest Service in 1926. It was then reconstructed twice in 1930 and in 1963, the latter being the present lookout station structure. The advent of better communications technology and aircraft eventually drove the lookout station to be retired

Old Glory Lookout Paint Project

As early as last June, A&A Painting had been contacted by the Friends of the Rossland Range to restore and repaint the old fire lookout station. The Friends had already done some work in the previous year on the station such as foundation upgrades, window replacements, and lighting control system upgrades.

Although the fire watch station is accessible by hiking, the whole painting crew had to be flown in by helicopter because of the equipment necessary as well as the cans of paint needed for the job. These things would have been difficult to carry on a hike.

Before Photos:

So as to restore and repaint the old fire watch station near its original color state, the A&A Painting crew decided to paint the whole exterior and interior ceiling in marine eggshell white. Since some scraping and sanding needed to be done, a battery powered sander was used since the station didn’t have any electricity. The interior was restored to its green color state as well. The painters even restored the old wooden desk and cabinet and gave it a new coat of varnish. Aside from scraping and sanding the exterior and interior walls, any holes had to be patched since the building materials date back to at least 1966, as well as the existence of some graffiti.

Although long retired from the B.C. Forest Service in 1977, the restoration and repainting of the fire lookout station on Old Glory is also a restoration of its long history and service.
